When it comes to XTANT, there’s an abundance of beauty everywhere you look.
The beauty of art in craft.
The beauty of heritage traditions.
The beauty of a passionate crowd.
The beauty of the historic location, a place that magically transports you back in time…
… this year – to the ‘Roots,’ where it all began.
A Memorable Gathering
After experiencing XTANT last year, I was thrilled to be invited back to capture it all through my lens. Set in the picturesque surroundings of Can Vivot in the heart of Palma, the event once again brought together artists, designers, and textile enthusiasts from around the globe. It is a truly one of a kind place curated and created by Kavita Parmar and Marcella Echavarria, a celebration of creativity and community.
The energy and enthusiasm of the participating ‘tribe’ are incredibly contagious. Seeing artists so passionate about their craft leaves a lasting impression on everyone who attends. There’s no other gathering where you can meet and mingle with artisans from different parts of the world, sharing insights into their unique talents.
This year’s edition – the Roots – was even bigger than last year’s. It showcased a more diverse range of textile art, from delicate pieces like handstitched dried petals by Katerina Knight to more experimental works like basket or root installations. It was a good mix of traditional techniques with forward-thinking approach.
Highlights of the Event
Marketplace
Each year, the standout feature is the variety of exhibits that capture the essence of tradition, presented in the marketplace where you can not only admire but also buy designs that have caught your eye.
Craft Workshops
The event offers a series of craft workshops, giving participants hands-on experiences. Led by experts in the field, these sessions provide insights into different techniques and materials : from embroidery, fabric construction, nuno silk, basket or broom making to weaving and appliqué techniques – the choice is incredible. Whether you are a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, there is something for everyone.
Thought-Provoking Discussions
XTANT Roots 2024 also hosts a series of thought-provoking discussions and panels. These conversations explore the cultural, social, and environmental aspects of textile art, fostering a deeper understanding of the medium’s impact.
XTANT was once again a special experience, blending art, culture, and community in a unique way.
Join me on a visual journey to get a glimpse of what it was like to be there.
