Hello dear friends! I’ve wanted to show you this DIY for quite some time so I am happy I can finally do it! But before we get into the details, let me warn you – making DIY Vintage-looking stools is contagious. I got inspired by the project I’ve seen on a lovely, polish blog Baba Ma Dom, and a few more creations that have been made based on the original tutorial. If I can be totally honest with you – it’s not the easiest DIY, but it’s totally worth the time and effort.
Some pieces of furniture never go out of style, and I believe that a vintage stool is one of them. It looks incredible as a side table next to a sofa, styled with seasonal winter accessories. I love the look of old, reclaimed wood, but it’s not always easy to find it, so I made it with easily accessible materials. You can see the result below, ready to start?
Here’s what you will need to create your own DIY Vintage Stool:
- thick wooden plank : 50 x 20 cm
- 4 wooden legs: 50 cm
- 2 short wooden leg joints: 15 cm
- 2 long wooden leg joints: 45 cm
- 2 support blocks : 10 cm
- small wooden dowels
- super glue
- drill
To create distressed finish I used:
- sharp knife
- wire brush
- sandpaper
- vintage wood finish wax/paint
Tutorial:
- Start your project by “torturing” each wooden element. The best tool for making the edges look aged is a sharp craft knife. Simply whittle the edges and make some cuts on the surface. Strangely it is a relaxing task! Then work on the surface of the wooden elements using a wire brush, which will enhance the wood’s texture.
2. When you are happy with the “aged” look of the wooden pieces, sand them to remove any splinters and rough edges. Now it’s time to build the stool, from all the “aged”‘ elements. The pieces are joined together with the small wooden dowels and glue. To join the pieces, measure and mark where the joints will be. Drill small holes in the legs and in the ends of the small joint pieces as shown.
3. Make both sets of two legs, joined with the small dowels.
4. Next, create leg supports under the stool’s seat, for the wooden legs. To do this, you need to drill holes in the bottom of the stool and in the two support blocks. Measure where the holes will go and drill them. Attach the support block to the bottom of the seat with the dowels and glue.
5. Attach the wooden legs to the support blocks in the same way, drilling holes in the blocks and the legs, and joining them with the dowels and glue.
6. Add the two long wooden leg supports between the fixed legs, again drilling holes in the legs and support bars. Join them with the dowels and glue. At the end choose your favourite finish paint. After the painted finish is dry, scratch the surface a few times with the wire brush again. And done!
That’s the final look! I love it! What do you think guys? After putting a lot of effort into creating this project, my opinion is SLIGHTLY biased, so please share your thoughts? Does it look ‘aged’ to you?

W sumie to u Ciebie lepiej prezentuje się stołek niż u mnie 😉 Wyszło idealnie!
Piękne zdjęcia robisz! Bardzo odpowiada mi ich klimat <3
No co Ty! Troszkę ciemniejszy wyszedł ale w sumie nie celowo 😉 Dziękuję Babo kochana! Dzięki Twojej wyobraźni wreszcie mam taki stołek :*
This looks like a great project that I can actually complete, resulting in a product that is actually usable. Great combination and great easy to understand directions. Thank you for sharing.
This is amazing idea! Just one question where can I buy the thick wooden plank from?
Thank you for sharing!
Hi Parita,
Thank you, happy you like it 🙂 You can find them in any hardware store in the wood section, I would love to see your project if you make it!
