DIY Dyed Textiles in Summer Tones

DIY Dyed fabricsWith thermometer showing 34’C, summer is officially here and that means season of garden parties, barbecues and casual outdoor dinners – let’s grab some food and go out to enjoy warm evenings filled with sweet scents, fresh drinks, cicada sounds and inevitable mosquitoes. Argh.

To make those moments a little prettier, I’ve decided to dye some 28 plain, fabric pieces, I’ve been maniacally collecting in the last 2 years, so that one day I can create a set of table linens. My color inspiration were the mature flowers’ petals in warm, summer tones…dusky pinks and delicate browns – just can’t get enough of it! I have found perfect dye shade in my local shop, and finally got to it last week. My conclusion is, it’s definitely one of those things you should try at home!

How to dye fabrics?
I have really enjoyed experimenting with different colors and the process itself, if you are thinking to dye fabrics too, have a look what I did:

You will need:

I’ve read that it’s best to start with untreated, washed fabrics to obtain best results so that’s what I did. Then I followed the instructions of the dye – most of them will have to be dissolved in hot (or boiling water) with salt before you can soak your fabrics in. The time to dye depends on the shade you want to achive:

  1. Light blush shades – 20 minutes
  2. Medium – 30-40 mins
  3. Dark, brownish ones – I boiled in colored water for over 1 hour

You can also make  little patterns on the fabrics like the little wrinkled circles you see in the photos below. Just tie few knots on the surface. It’s really fun to get creative and try different possibilities, I have a feeling you will like it.

Ta da! From summer, floral inspiration to the final result, I have to say I’m pretty pleased with how the set turned out, and can’t wait to style the garden table with it.

Have you ever dyed fabrics before? Were you satisfied with the results? What colors are your favourite?

Have a great day x
