Last Saturday we took a day trip to Lago D’Orta, the lake in the Northern Italy, which doesn’t seem to be very popular amongst tourists – in fact, I have never heard about it until we moved here! Have you?
Located on the west side of Lago Maggiore, just 1,5 hour drive from Milan, the charming lake, in my opinion is a pearl of the region. Having visited the super-famous Garda and Como before, I haven’t been expecting to be sunned by the beauty of another lake but…I was totally wrong! After spending only half an hour around, I fell madly in love with this place!
The lake’s atmosphere seems to be very romantic what would explain why it attracted so many poets and writers from all around the world. Romanesque architecture, cute town and beautiful island in the middle – make it definitely a spot worth visitng!
After spending a day exploring the town, I’ve rounded up my top things to do in Lago D’Orta:
- Vist San Giulio town – it’s the prettiest and most charming town around, built on the hill, leading to the lake. Explore the characterists, narrow Italian streets, filled with little shops, hidden cafes and restaurants.
- Take a walk along the lakeside path – it leads from the main San Giulio square, out of the town. Get ready for breathtaking views!
- Have lunch, aperitivo or dinner in one of the lakesides restaurants – delicious food, honest prices and a buzzing atmosphere with vistalago.
- Take a 10 minutes boat trip to the Island (4,50 Euros – roundtrip) and explore its heart including Basilica do San Giulio.
- Visit Omegna town – it might be not as charming as San Giulio but it has a local market with great wooden goods and best ice-cream I’ve ever tasted!

Have a great day!
Oh my, it looks like a ferrytale! And you are right – I have never heard about it before either.
